Outdoor Warning Siren Test Alert

Feb 27, 2015 (updated on Feb 27, 2015)

On Tuesday, March 3, Peoria County and City of Peoria outdoor warning sirens will be tested as usual at 10:00 a.m. However, the length of this month's test will be longer than normal, approximately three minutes in length. The National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, will be activating County and City sirens this month to test a new system that allows the NWS to activate all sirens within Peoria County if necessary.

Peoria County EMA, Peoria's Office of Emergency Management (POEM), and the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) have historically been responsible for sounding the sirens when warranted during severe weather or another emergency event. Now, the NWS also has the capability to activate the sirens, adding another layer of protection for Peoria County residents. If a strong storm system indicating tornado activity were to suddenly appear with very little warning in the county, the NWS would be able to immediately sound the alarm.
